Unleashing Creative Expression
A University student at Buffalo, NY, alumna (2001), "Michelle" Shyhing Wu honed her visual skills in the fast-paced design world, yet art has always been her true calling. The pandemic of 2020 provided the much-needed moment to fully embrace her true passion, a return to painting that felt like coming home.
Ms. Wu's distinctive work sits at the crossroads of the real and the surreal, delving into how our subconscious minds shape our world. Her intuitive approach, characterized by layering unique brushwork and rich texture, creates immersive experiences that spark emotional and psychological discovery. She aims to illuminate what lies beneath the surface—fragmented memories and internal landscapes—offering viewers a compelling visual invitation to reflect and connect with their inner selves.

Artist Vision

Art serves as a gateway to uncovering the unseen aspects of the mind that lie beneath the visual surface. My work explores how the subconscious and unconscious shape our perception of the world. Through layered brushwork, texture, and dimension, I create images that invite emotional and psychological discovery.
I have a deep admiration for nature, as I believe all living creatures convey feelings and consciousness. I enjoy depicting them with a clever twist and imagination, making them seem as if they embody human qualities. I draw inspiration from traditional Chinese painting, which emphasizes expressing the spirit of all things perceived in nature—focusing more on painting consciousness rather than merely mimicking real objects, allowing the artist to communicate their current state of mind through their hands.
Sometimes, this creative process is spontaneous and unfolds naturally. The marks I make may not always be perfect, but I embrace them and work through the uncertainties, much like the journey of life itself. I cherish and celebrate the beauty of nature and life.
